Snowed again last night, i don't know what happened, until three weeks ago we were having a mild winter. Now it's a different game. Yesterday was messy with temps close to thirty and lots of wet snow. I got out of work at 3:30 AM and it was colder (20') and had snowed several more inches. I got up at 7 AM to clear the drive so #1daughter&son can get out the drive - 'harry has left an hour earlier but her vehicle can get through it - but by now the temperature has dropped to 3'! So I saw a sunrise for the first time in a long time, i didn't evaporate or anything; it was nice.

But the pictures i wanted to show are here: )

Now this was an interesting situation, my sympathy lay with the toad but saw no way to do anything about it. I couldn't see how the snake could accomplish his meal because the toad is seemingly to big to swallow. I came out later and the toad was gone, the snake was still there and he was fatter but it did not look to me like it had a whole toad in him

('harry in her first lj appearance)

We drove to Ashtabula Co. in the N.E. part of the state where there are 17 covered bridges. The bridges date from 1868 to a few contemporary ones. But most are from around 1880-1900. Many are luckily still in use because the area is still rural. A revival started 50 years ago when a bridge was restored by college students and volunteers.

Yesterday after I took the snow pictures, I drove on through the park toward home. Rounding a bend I saw a pool of green in the snow, a couple hundred feet off the road. I pulled off at the nearest place I could find and walked 1000 feet back to the spot. An old part of the river channel still filled with spring flooding already had a pale green skim of slime that shown against the surrounding snow. The upright branches poking through the water were also covered with snow. I aimed my shot and it turned out that the battery of my take everywhere camera died on the last shots I took ten minuets before. Read more... )

I drove to the lake Monday. They are saying all five of the Great Lakes are completely frozen over for the first time in 20 years. Lake Erie is ice all the way across, in theory you could walk the 50 miles to Canada. If it had been a brighter day it would have been difficult to get any definition in the photos at all.

thanks for the kind comments about the yardstick collection. Here are photos of what is displayed:

These are in the mudroom, sort of outside, sort of inside the house.

Inside, 'harry has not minded me putting this group in the living room. I have around 60 more bundled in the closet; even I can see that, that is enough wall space to use for this purpose. If we had a livable basement instead of a cellar, I might have gone 'man-cave' and put them all up there.

Anyway, each of yardstick has two stories; first the business that gave them out and then the person who took it home and used it, sometimes for decades. I usually put the worst side out, showing marks made while measuring, paint spots, sometimes a note or phone number. If I went on ebay I could get them from all over the country, but another part of the collection is that it specializes in mostly my county and home, where I grew up.

Adams St. Cemetery, Berea, Ohio.

Coe Lake, Berea, Ohio.
It's getting so I have to back back more than once to get a decent shot, because this one ain't it.

I drive by this Dairy Queen at least once a week when i go to get my mom for Sunday dinner. This is a beautiful design, the last one around; all other's replaced by those generic one's that look like Taco Bells and Arby's (this may all be regional stuff). It has no inside dining and the rest rooms are only accessed from the outside. The owner's house is on sight and there is also miniature golf and a driving range. They close in the winter and that is another beautiful shot; when the snow white building is surrounded by snowfields and there is a chain across the drive.

Some of the older siding on the almost-a-barn is crumbling so i'm putting some patches on it. I hate to cover the texture of the old wood so i took more pictures, i know I've done this before. What draws us to old faded blue jeans and tumbled down barns?

This barn is located on the campus where my mother now lives. It's used for storage but i don't think it's long for this world because they wall is bowed out and i can imagine them not wanting to bother.
