Nothing but neglect has let them spread. A few, now that i think about it, more than 20 years ago the lawn was littered with buttercups; i know because i have pictures of my preschoolers sitting in them.
Are they scented, or more like wood violets? I love them either way. Mine are scented and have spread a lot this year-- we didn't get a lot of rain, but everything seemed to love the LATE rain and went crazy.
Buttercups sound very nice-- I don't think we have those.
