A third large branch fell off one of the black walnuts. by large I'm talking, at least 15 feet and four or more inches thick. I'm not worried, the tree seems in good health. There is a heavy crop of walnuts this year and it's taking off some of the branches. One came down and after I cut it up, there were maybe 50 nuts on the ground; just a section of one branch. I've been very lucky, the branches keep only, grazing my almost-a-barn. An aluminum ladder that is stored on the back of the barn may have been bent beyond use. I haven't had time to see. The people I live with keep me busy and full of anxiety. I think the tree is no more than 75 years old, maybe younger. The one old photo I have of the house form the late 40's, early 50's, the tree isn't there yet. The spread has got to be close to 100 feet, truly amazing. The trunk has grown noticeably wider in the past 30+ years.
That's something I must do, find an old picture and compare.

Speaking of trees; it's always there but i was studying the base (is it a stump, if it's only 8" high?) of the old maple that had to be cut down some years ago. A pup tent could have been set up on the space it takes up.

I'm sure I asked you before, and I think you told me they're super hard to crack, but do you manage to eat any of them? I know I saw something about how great they were, awhile back.

They are very hard to crack, which is why anything with black walnut is expensive. I have eaten some; once you manage to open one up, you need a pick the looks like a dental tool to get to the meat. Unlike an English Walnut that generally comes out in two halves, the nutmeat of a black walnut is intertwined with shell; it's like a maze, the biggest pieces are around the size of a pea.
The flavor is more earthy, maybe gamey the way wild meat is gamey, different than raised animals ..if that makes sense.
It is such a waste; I just poked around, found someone selling black walnut meat for $5.99 an oz. For the work involved it's not outrageous. I could be rich!

Didn't the Shawnee, or whoever, have a secret for getting them out? I wouldn't blame them for not telling though.

I haven't seen the particular one but something like it. You can see how long it would take to fill that bowl and black walnuts are HARD.

Yes the lease on their apartment was up in June. He told her he was getting his own place. She wanted to be back in Cleveland, one of their biggest problems and she wanted to go into the Emily Program.

He still hasn't filed for divorce, just has the papers ready. He can't seem to make a decision and that doesn't help her move on. He came to town Saturday, stayed overnight and bought her a new smart watch..WTF?
She's an emotional basket case. She has her food and alcohol issues; loves him? But not enough to live in Delaware Ohio. They both are signed up to be teachers 130 miles apart. IDK. He wants her to fix herself, but he has issues too...as does everybody.

Does he also have substance problems? or mainly personality/maturity issues. You said a while back that he 'stood up and made vows, he wasn't done yet.' Is she teaching again? What happened with the Emily Program--did she stay the projected time?

Does he have substance abuse issues? I come from a household where there was no alcohol, not on moral grounds. Someone gave my mom a bottle of wine once, when I was somewhere in my teen years, I got a sip, she may have poured it out. She just didn't drink. I have bought wine and liquor, i like a margherita now and then at a Mexican restaurant. To me, he drinks a lot of beer, he got drunk at their wedding, his father died of complications from alcoholism. I think he's at risk. He would expect my daughter to go out to dinner, to bars, while he put away some beer while she wasn't supposed to be drinking.
I think definite maturity issues. He's a smart guy, teaches advanced high school math.

I meant, well I ask myself, He pledged in a large wedding, that he insisted on, she'd have gotten married in front of a judge, but in front of his community "for richer..in sickness and health" Then she fell into a crises, fell under alcoholism. He spent a lot of time with his friends, more time in sports, also participates in online gambling. Can you blame him for walking out after a year and a half? What do two people owe each other?

Yes, she is teaching inner city kids, which she loves to do, incredibly hard work.
She bailed on the Emily Program; I think she felt she got the basics "this is how they do it, now i can do it on my own" She needed to stay at least another four weeks. She wanted to get to work and rebuild.
