It doesn't really have any resonance. There's a guy that puts up lessons on youtube; in one of his videos he compares the quality of the very cheap to the top of the line models and finds they all have a decent sound, even my $17 version. LOL, I've seen clips of people using hair dryers and ballons to power them, but I think it's like having a pipe organ turned up to 11. You can play it, somewhat, quietly, even introduce a little vibrato with breath control. Though for my ability, it wouldn't really matter.
I love rock and roll, but also music made with these off beat, to most Americans at least, instruments.
I have a lesson book, but like all of them, it's full of old uncopywrited songs. Practicing Frere Jacques and Hot Cross Buns is not inspiring. Though the book does have My Bonnie. The libraries used to have Fake Books, which would be perfect for one handed playing, but that gone by the way, what does the library have?
I saw a couple of YouTube videos where they're blowing through a long tube so they can play with two hands. Looked a little weird though-- like a cross between a musical instrument and a medical intervention.
I can't the melodica book has letters and notes. If I find something that's like a fakebook, with very simple notation; I'll draw a staff on a piece of paper and write the notes as letters in the correct spaces, THEN write the letter/notes on another piece of paper; this often doesn't work very well.
I like the mouthpiece better, it's supposed to be more difficult but it works for me. I can't play that long anyway, my throat dries out.
