Got out of work a few minutes ago; a light powdery snow was on the car. After i started the car, i walked around to remove the snow, which blew away in front of the brush. Walking around the back, i caught the sound of howling coyotes in the distance; i could just hear them over the rumble of the car. I drove home through the quiet streets passing only the occasional police and newspaper delivery car. I went past the bakery i spent some time at and the lights were off in that short time between when the bakers go home and the sales clerks come in and put out the breads, cakes and cookies.

When i got home i came in the house and was greeted as always, by our big orange Tom, always friendly, always hungry. I got a scoop of food, but not for him! I walked back out to the mudroom and got another scoop of bird food and took both out to feed the birds and a stray cat that lives in the area. He/she is beautiful, i call it "Cinnamon Cat" because of it's markings. While stooping down to pour food into the bowl, i heard an owl hooting off in the woods: "Hoot hoot, hoot; hooot, hoot". Always the same, every year; unless, once in awhile, it's the unsettling call of a screech owl.

That done, i walk around the corner of the house with my cup of bird food and hear, then see, crashing through the brush by the railroad, a deer, and a second already across the street waiting for it's companion. They often camp out down the bank, huddled in the snow.

It's a quiet night, the snow has muffled the sound of the city, in the distance i hear the freeway, a little closer i hear snow plows crashing through some parking lot. I look around in the dark, enjoying our little oasis, of woods on a mostly quiet street, when i know, a mile or less, in any direction leads back to "the city". I think quickly, how long will it last; but the owl hoots again and it's time to go back in and know, today it's alright.
