Middleburg Hts. Ohio. May/2009

A year ago, the park system expanded into a wetland area someways behind our house. A trail was built connecting two small lakes, three miles apart. Something that was revealed after the construction, though i doubt many people have noticed, is the remains of whatever this was. The water is lying in a ditch or channel that was dug some 20 or 30 feet from a stream. At some point in time, heavy planks were pounded into the edge of the ditch; they are visible rising out of the water, like rotten teeth. I have no idea what this once was, though it must have been important, because it was a lot of work to drive those planks into the muck. A water trough has been suggested, but with a creek and lowlands all around, why construct a water trough? A spring house? The water isn't what you would want to put your milk jugs in. It's age is anyones guess, there was still a farms here 50 years ago, 100 years? No idea.

I was thinking a well. The farm next door has one on the creek. This is what Olga, who was brought up there, called it. It was used to pump up water to the dairy and to water stock. They had a rain tank for the house. It could be 100 years old.

That's a neat find. Does anyone in your Park Service know what it is?

No, i wouldn't know who to ask, from my dealings with the park; they seem more nature oriented (which is fine) and so so much interested in the historical.
