Your idea about a downed alien craft reminded me of the book Eye to Eye by Catherine Jinks. It is a kid's or teenager's book, but very well written I reckon. It is science fiction. Most of her writing is set in the Medieval era, which she studied for her degree. It's a great read, I reckon.
