It's still strange out in the lower 40. The zucchini has one fruit on it's turning brown. The yellow zucchini has stopped producing any kind of fruit. The tomatoes still seem to be just hanging on. I'm getting some cherry types and there is one ripening beefsteak on the vine. The plumb plant has tiny fruit on it. Though they are unrelated species the tomato and zucchini seem to have the same sort of un-wellness. What kind of a year is it, when you don't have too many zucchini and tomatoes?

The corn is in bloom; this is one of the first times i've grown sweet corn, usually i grow heirloom field varieties. As the corn grows will be the test of weather the new fence can hold off deer and raccoons. I'm getting some small pole beans; the bean plants themselves are out growing the seven foot poles they are climbing.

Other then that, peas are about done out, onions are alright, pumpkins vines are starting to bloom, my dill patch is thriving.

While weeding in the garden today, i caught the smell of a pipe or cigar. It must have come some distance because, i'm not aware of my immediate neighbors smoking. For just a seconed, i thought of either one of my grandfathers. Funny how even an unpleasant odor came smell sweet for a moment.

*sigh* Reading this makes me long for a garden of my own!

I know what you mean about catching a whiff and it stirring a fond memory. I can still remember the smell of cherry tobacco entrenched in my father's coats...

It is a funny summer where the tomatoes and zucchini fail to thrive!

Yes, smell evokes the most memories :)

Do you think tobacco is unpleasant? I kind of like it, as long as I don't have to breathe too much of it. Even cigarette smoke makes me kind of nostalgic...

I wish I could share some sunshine and you could share some water! I was just reading about how great it is to grow your own onions; if you agree, I might try it...

Onions are easy to grow, though for me they have always been a bit on the small side.

My town called itself "The Onion Capitol of the World" in the 19th century. So i always feel i'm letting down the founders with my only adequate onions.
