There's this moment in It's A Wonderful Life that always makes me cringe. George Baily has come to realize that he has been screwed again by life, looks around his house, walks over to his corner where his projects and dreams, in the form of cardboard bridges and other projects are, and sweeps everything off the table. It makes me cringe because i wonder why we, especially men, like to build things, and dream of building other things and just, dream. Why do we do this?

My brother builds model car kits; he has done this all his life, is a member of clubs etc. Then there is me, stained glass, reading, bread baking, my genealogy. No one gives a hoot up my genealogy; i will pass it along to no one. Only one other person would eat my bread; the glass is something to keep me busy, but then what?

What is the urge; was it better when we worked 12 hours until we dropped?

I come back to this; what about gardening, is there anything more futile. Today i was out in the cold..50 degrees, putting away garden stakes and rolling fences, for three servings of beans and some rotten onions.

Pointless.
