The Great Silence is coming to an end, I hope. My coworker ran out of vacation and sick time and we are allowed to donate unused vacation time, so I gave her a week and will give her one more if she requires it. My supervisor has helped me "create" extra vacation time by switching some of my vacation days to sick time. We could get in trouble if caught but, i don't think anyone cares at my agency; at least unless confronted with a problem.

It's open enrollment time at work and i texted my coworker about this. The agency gives us the option of a low deductible plan that requires contribution each paycheck or a high deductible plan that has no copay or paycheck contribution but requires that an individual pay the first $3,000 in expenses or a family $6,000 after which 100% of costs are covered. This is what I have had and only one time in eight years have I had my insurance cover anything; that was when I had my second cataract surgery. It's catastrophic insurance and as i'm relatively healthy it's worked out for me.

However, this year the agency is charging $75.00 a month on the high deductible plan for spousal coverage. this is blindsiding my coworker. If she was only carrying her 19 yr old son, it would still be zero but include a spouse and there's the fee. Her husband has applied for disability because of his issues and has been denied twice. since this is getting lengthy i will just break down her numbers and let it stand for itself. I think this is ok because it is anonymous.

She earns probably between $22,000 and 23,000 a year.
Until this coming year she had the upfront $6,000 deductible.
Add from now on a bimonthly copay of $75 x 24 = $1800
Her health insurance will cost $7,800 out of $22,000 a year, before she actually has any coverage.
Yes, the insurance does negotiate the fees down so that a $150.00 doctor visit will be $75 or whatever.
anyway, throw in her rent, over $1,000 a month an 11 year old car and how long can they last?
