You're not really supposed to commemorate a death so much as a birth but today is the 50th anniversary of my dad's passing. I lived seven years while he was alive and the other 50 after he was gone. My marriage, my children, my education and career would all have been different; i'd likely not be sitting here writing to you had he lived. It's a thing beyond right or wrong, fair or unfair, it's all i've known for half a century.
I'll say this, he was a good man with faults; who i never got to know.

No doubt your life would have been a lot different; who knows how. Still, I bet you would have been essentially the same kind, deeply thoughtful, creative person that you are now. Maybe that is part of his legacy.

I am sorry. You're right, it's beyond fair or unfair, but still... unfair. The saints are always commemorated on the day of their death, by the way-- their birthday into eternity.

No doubt you both would have found new grounds... perhaps found the best of each. That's a nice possibility to ponder. I think you turned out just fine...
